This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have been teaching at my current school for 11 years and have seen a number of amazing students pass through these hallways. Our attendance rate is extremely high and we have to push students hours after the final bell has rung. They love being in this environment and I love teaching them.
My current students love to learn and are passionate about their future.
They have amazing questions and insightful opinions. I cannot wait to see their future successes.
My Project
My school's resources have always been somewhat limited. My classes are usually only able to read what's in the book room, which mostly has books that are over a hundred years old.
I recently came upon Trevor Noah's Born A Crime and would love to have my students read a book that is recent, relevant and revealing.
It would be fun to read the text, but also highlight that with clips from The Daily Show or Mr. Noah's comedy act.
This would also help me to prepare the students for AP Lang, which is the class they will take the following year. This will allow us to dissect Mr. Noah's arguments throughout the text and analyze the effect of one's culture.
