My students need inspirational words to touch their hearts and open their minds. Reading a picture book a day can do just that and more. We need to bring back the love of reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 21 amazing students. They have a great attitude towards learning and love a challenge! My school has been a Title I school for many years. 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school ability groups the upper grades. I have the high 4th graders and they need to be challenged. I incorporate various high-interest enrichment activities that are based on the standards. I want to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. The most rewarding feeling is knowing that you made a difference and seeing their growth as an individual.
My Project
We need books. There is a strong push for complex texts, common core, non-fiction, annotations, AR quizzes, vocabulary development, and lets not forget the end all - be all, standardized testing. While this is important, the love for reading has been lost over time. Many children do not read for pleasure anymore! This breaks my heart. I am an avid reader and I want to share my love of books with my 4th graders. I can do so by sharing a picture book each day focusing on the skill or topic planned. In this way, we can open the magic and spread the love for reading.
Children love picture books and the message can be so strong even for upper elementary students.
For example, The Name Jar, one of the titles requested is culturally diverse book and teaches acceptance and imparting the message that it is okay to be different. I chose titles that focus on kindness, friendship, uniqueness. We're All Wonders is a picture book version of the chapter book Wonder. This book is so powerful and teaches children to have empathy; something society lacks. My school hasn't had a guidance counselor in years. Picture books can teach various topics/themes that they so desperately need to be successful adults. Please help me open the magic in my classroom. Thank you!
