My students are amazing. They arrive each day at school excited to learn. My school district, made up of mostly low socioeconomic households, has an enrollment of 504 students. Most students speak English, but 46% speak mainly Spanish at home.
These books will give them the opportunity to explore a world they have never seen.
They live in a small rural town with the next largest city over an hour away. Most families farm or complete work in factories nearby. Many are children of migrant farm families and may not have access to a large variety of print at home.
The mentor texts I have requested will take us places we could never get to on our own. Whether we are at the library with Tomas, are having Chicken Sunday dinner at Grandma's, or are visiting The Last Stop on Market Street, we will be well traveled by the end of fourth grade.
Reading mentor texts every day helps us grow together as a class, to grow to be better writers, and it helps us blossom into students who love to read.
These mentor texts will used as examples of great writers, to teach reading strategies, to learn social studies concepts and to help us learn the importance and impact of being kind.
