My students need a trip with Global Glimpse to empower them to become responsible global citizens
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Can you think of a life changing experience that started you on the path you are on today? For me, that would be my time spent volunteering/working/exploring abroad. I would like to provide that same opportunity for students by leading a 3-week trip to San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic.
We are an all boys public school located in an inner city neighborhood, and the students face a lot of challenges in their daily lives.
Despite having many obstacles, they strive to do their best for themselves, their school and their families. The dedicated staff at my school are trying their best to nurture young men of integrity who will one day become leaders that make a positive impact in their local and global communities. Each of the 12 students going on this trip have shown themselves to be leaders, with some being at a point in life where they need a little push and opportunity to open up more to this potential. These motivated students are involved in a variety of activities: basketball, wrestling, marching band, martial arts, service organizations, cultural organizations, faith groups, STEM clubs, and more. All 12 students are on the path to college, and I hope this experience helps them to become more caring, committed, and confident global citizens.
The funding that I am requesting would be split amongst the 12 phenomenal students that have been nominated and accepted into the program for the summer of 2015. The trip costs $4,500 but because Global Glimpse is a non-profit that wants all students to have access to this amazing opportunity, many of our scholars received scholarships and need to raise a total of $450! This is still a daunting amount for some students, and I am trying to help out. While on the trip, students will take part in a variety of activities including: teaching English lessons, creating a Community Action Project with a local agency, working alongside someone in a local industry, sight-seeing, living on a dollar a day, and hearing from various speakers on topics including poverty, commerce, government, education, and history.
I guarantee this trip will change students' lives for the better.
The students who participated in the Global Glimpse program last year can't sing its praises enough! They possess more compassion and confidence and are committed to making the world a better place. I am excited to be chaperoning the next 12 global glimpsers this year!
