I LOVE my middle schoolers!! Every one of my students came in to my classroom facing both personal and academic challenges, including extreme poverty, immigrating from other countries, fear of deportation, broken families, homelessness, gang affiliations, etc.. This year has been very challenging, but my kids have come a long way! They continue to persevere, wanting better for themselves and their futures. My goal for the rest of this year is to get them excited about their future through reading and stories of those that have also overcome and excelled.
Almost every one of my students read at least 1-2 grades below their current, and often avoid reading because they view the books at their level as "kid" books.
I want to change that by giving them books that are full of multi-cultural examples of success, overcoming obstacles, surviving through was seems impossible, and other books that will help then see a positive outlook on their future. I can do that with your help!
My Project
I want to provide my students with a multitude of reading materials in all subject areas that can provide them with different perspectives, and with opportunities to see and understand the world outside of their own. I want them to read about all the options the world hold for them, to understand how others persevere through difficulties, and see a future they may not be yet able to see for themselves through reading. I want them to read about different cultures, places, ideas, viewpoints, discoveries, and have them excited to learn and use what they learn to make this world a better place!
