Help me give my students a literacy rich environment where we will continue to grow a love of reading and writing. These books will serve as mentor texts and read alouds to increase reading comprehension and expand vocabulary.
I have the privilege of working with amazing students each day. Our school is located in a rural area of Virginia. Over half of our students receive free or reduced lunch and we have a school-wide Title I program to provide assistance to our struggling learners. Half of my class receives ESL services.
Even with these challenges, my students come to school each day with a sparkle in their eyes and an eagerness to learn in their hearts.
In our classroom, we value the opinions and contributions of all learners. We believe learning should be fun, engaging, and sometimes loud and messy! We believe that all of us can succeed when the right attitudes, opportunities, and tools are present.
These books will allow me to model literacy strategies and provide mentor texts to support our reading and writing goals. Students will learn to apply comprehension strategies such as retelling, summarizing, identifying main idea & details, and comparing & contrasting through read aloud activities and independent reading of these books.
Students will use these books to expand and develop their vocabulary, learn new comprehension skills, and support their creative writing.
Having strong mentor texts available in our classroom will provide examples of different genres of text and types of writing. Students will utilize these books to find examples of strong vocabulary and learn new and important words.
