Our school is a separate public day school which provides special education services for students who range in age from 11-21 years, with a wide range of cognitive disabilities. The school provides collaborative, comprehensive educational services utilizing a trans-disciplinary approach.
Our school promotes the advancement of each student’s highest potential to access and interact with the surrounding community, access post-secondary academic options and obtain and retain employment.
Our educational program provides students with a modified set of courses from the MCPS program of studies based on the Common Core Standards. Students graduate at 21 years of age with a Maryland Certificate of Program Completion. RTS is comprised of 3 levels: middle school (ages 11-14), high school (ages 15-17) and upper school (ages 18-21). All students have an Individual Education Program (IEP) which aligns classroom instruction to each student’s specific academic, functional, and social/behavioral goals. Classroom teachers differentiate instruction to address the individual skills of each student in all classes. The primary objectives of RTS are continuous student achievement and maximum independence after graduation.
My Project
Technology is incredibly important for our students with autism! The magic in a classroom begins when you integrate technology into the curriculum. I want to help my children create magic in the classroom by using these Chromebooks with apps focusing on book reading, book writing, illustration, poetry, and math along with other apps for reinforcement. This technology will empower our students to learn and explore in a whole new way. They will get to use their fingers on a touch screen to learn to read, write, draw and solve math problems through various apps.
My students will be amazed how technology will help them explore and reach new heights.
It will be an exciting tool to motivate my students to learn using a current technology that is needed. Teaching and learning are no longer confined to specific content areas. Cross-curricular units help integrate topics, therefore providing multiple opportunities for reinforcement. Connecting literature, art, writing, math and technology, along with other subject areas makes learning authentic. Having this technology will motivate student learning in a positive and enriching way.
