Do you remember what it felt like to get a book in your hands?

I remember getting hooked on a book and it felt like Christmas!! I was excited every time I opened the book. I want my 4th grade students to feel this same joy!! I want them to beg me to keep reading!!

My classroom consists of 30 students who are mostly lower income. These children have found a love for reading and are thirsty for more!!!

My Project

Novel studies allow students to read "real" stories instead of basal stories. It all starts with the opportunity to read engaging texts. It is human nature to love a good story. The novel studies I do with my fourth graders engage the reading . It got them excited and engaged in deep thinking about reading comprehension strategies as well as lively discussions and debates!! I overheard a discussion on point of view. And I even watched students discuss and support their inferences. A sense of community and scholarly inclusion is created when students laugh, gasp, and weep in unison while reading the same engrossing grade-level novel.
