My students are a diverse group, with a wide range of academic ability. All of them, however, have a love of reading. Creating a reading culture in a school is essential if you want to encourage students to become engaged and motivated readers.
When I suggested to my homeroom students that we needed a classroom library of novels of their choice, their enthusiasm was incredible!
They love our daily scheduled reading time, but they said they would enjoy it more if they could have some more books to choose from.
They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common - they love to learn, to explore, and together, we are helping them develop a growth mindset.
My Project
Each morning, our school has time set aside for the children to sit quietly and read. At times, they will forget to bring a novel and they will have no choice but to read any book that is available in the room. Unfortunately, this leads to some "fake reading"- the book is open, but nothing more. Today, I had an idea- what if I put together a library of high-interest, age appropriate novels? I asked my students what they thought, and they immediately started shouting out book titles!
Every book listed in this project came by student request.
I asked for suggestions. "Wonder", one student called out. "Harry Potter PLEASSSEEE", requested another. "What about dystopian novels?", asked another. Even the shy children had a suggestion, from the "Middle School" series, "100 series" and more.
Having different genres and updated novels to choose from will help my students learn to love to read. In the words of Dr. Seuss: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
