My students attend a small, rural school with a 48% free and reduced lunch population. Many of my students live in low income housing developments and have attended several schools before they even get to 1st grade.
The transient nature of their home life can make it difficult for my students to have experiences and relationships that build the background knowledge they need to acquire new information in the classroom.
My goal as a teacher is to provide a space for exploration and community building so that my students can experience learning in a consistent, safe and supportive environment.
My Project
My students need a clean, roomy rug to sit on for morning meetings and independent work time. The One World rug will provide a comfortable space for the boys and girls to sit during whole group and small group lessons.
A classroom rug is an essential gathering spot for all sorts of learning activities throughout the day in our classroom.
We start our school day on the rug to greet our friends, review the calendar and play team building games. Later in the day students use the rug area in small groups to spread out and read, write a story or solve math puzzles together. At the end of the day, the rug is our go to spot for a read aloud before we go home.
A comfy rug with an appealing design will provide us with a designated area to start and end our day on a positive note and a comfortable seat!
