This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember going to the library as a child and looking for your favorite authors? I bet you looked for Beverly Cleary, Eric Carle, or the newest Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys books. My students have not yet found their favorite authors that will excite them to keep wanting more!
My class consists of 25 second graders in an urban school, where a high percentage of the students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
My students learn best when concepts are taught in multiple ways which helps them understand more abstract ideas.
My Project
Getting students hooked on a specific author is one of my goals as a teacher. Reading multiple books by the same authors will help to increase their reading skills get them excited to read more! They can identify an author they love and then try to emulate that author through their writing as well!
Every student needs to identify with an author.
This allows them to better understand books and create an excitement and love for reading. The various authors I selected are well-known children's book authors and have a true craft that my students can fall in love with. I will create author buckets with the various titles. My students will then participate in author studies in which each of my students will read through an author bucket, find commonalities, and find their favorite author!
