OohRah! So you want some stories about war and the soldiers that served? Is that right, Soldier? Are you talking World War II? Vietnam? Iraq? Afghanistan?
Non-Fiction.
Often stuffy, dry boring lists of facts. Social Studies. Forget it.
Students who are "into" history are few and far between in our school.
Made-up stuff based on what happened? Now we're talkin'.
I am recreating our library/media center to resemble a book store rather than the stuffy public library. There will be a "Historical Fiction" section with sub-classifications by era, including identified shelves of various wars/conflicts. This will make it easier for the kids to find the books they want. I fully expect those shelves to be empty more often than not.
My Project
Military Historical Fiction will introduce our students to significant periods in our history. They will move from one war to the next learning various pieces of our history, as well as, world history. Usually after reading good fiction books about a topic, many students will want to read about "the real thing". At which time they move on to the non-fiction which gives more historical details about our world.
Opportunities are endless with the help of your donation.
There are so many positives. Knowledge of World History. Knowledge of the Armed Forces and the many ways we work together for a common goal. We have students whose relatives are soldiers or veterans. We may have students who decide to join the military as a career. We are home to the Rock Island Arsenal, one the largest DOD installations in the country. Our kids need to know that significance. Thank you for your consideration.
