I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are a Title I school with many socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and the primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity. I teach both Spanish and English Language Development, thus all of my students are language learners of one kind or another.
While many of my students enter my room with absolutely no prior exposure to the language, there are many students at our school with family members at home who speak it to them, and many are already able to read and write in the target language, and I would like to build a program with their unique needs in mind.
My students fall along the spectrum of linguistic proficiency and represent an array of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, but when they enter my classroom we all become family.
My Project
As we enter the month of May and inch along toward June, I have been reflecting back on my first year of teaching--how far I have come and how far I have yet to grow. Teaching involves so many moving parts--myriad moment-to-moment decisions must be made while balancing the emotional and educational needs of up to 30 individual adolescents at the same time.
What Great Teachers Do Differently and the companion workbook will help me analyze and learn from the habits of truly effective teachers, while Onward and its companion workbook will help me cultivate the emotional resilience necessary for a long and successful career.
This first year has taught me so much, and the main lesson that I have learned is that I have so much more to learn! The two book sets in this project will help me structure my reflective work as I strive towards becoming a better educator in my second year of teaching.
