Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my district, and at my campus, the technology budget it spent mostly on the upper grades to prepare them for state testing. Kindergarten often misses out on great programs that could enhance learning, because the budget just isn't big enough.
I teach kindergarten at a great elementary school in Texas.
Most students at my school are living in poverty and receive reduced, or free, breakfast and lunch. Students love coming to school and I love teaching them and watching them grow and learn.
My Project
There isn't a program that could completely erase the need for a teacher, but there are some wonderful programs that can supplement what we are learning in the classroom. Reading Eggs is a program for early literacy learning. What I love about the program, having done a free 30 day trial last year, is that students take a test to begin, then start at their own individual academic level. Students who don't know letters begin with lessons on letters. Those who already know letters start higher in the program, working with sounds, phonics, and reading skills. Every child is met at his level and taken to a higher level through fun, academic online activities. Another great program is IXL for math. This program uses multiple choice testing to quiz students on the skills we are learning in class. The wonderful thing about IXL is that it reads the questions and answers to the child! How great is that?
With these 2 programs, students will be excited every time they hear we are going to the computer lab.
They will also know exactly what to do on the student computers in the classroom during center time. I am also requesting pencil grips, stickers, and turtle bean bags. We could really use these materials for our writing time, as incentives, and for short breaks from learning. My classroom is already great, but can only get better with these great materials and programs.
