My students need new engaging books that encourages them to increase independent reading, the greatest indicator of success in school. Our library is yellowed, and outdated, help me reignite their passion for reading!
While over 90% of my students come from low-income households, my students are hard working, independent, and sweet. I have special education students, students who are learning English as a second language, and students who are in homeless shelters. There is a huge range of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds among my 48 students. I see 24 students in the morning when I teach them reading. I see, the other half in the afternoon. Over the school year we have built a relationship of trust, and I have come to cherish this amazing group of 10 year olds.
Most of my students are reading below grade-level, and many are 2-3 grade levels behind.
Majority of our classroom library books are yellowed-paperbacks reflecting the interests of white males living on the east coast. The disconnect between our classroom library and my students' interest, abilities, and background knowledge, creates a huge reading engagement challenge. Many of my students do not consider themselves readers and see reading as a chore. It has been my sole purpose this year to change these mindsets.
My Project
This supplemental classroom library project was created after bringing in books from our public library to see what inspired my students to love reading.
Initially, seeing my students go for books such as, Captain Underpants, and Dork Diaries made me cringe.
However, seeing my students truly captivated in reading has made me a believer in the engaging abilities of these trendy titles. To hear my students complain about having to STOP reading was music to my ears.
Additionally, these text are not only interesting, they are at their reading level. Accessing "just right" texts are essential keys to reading achievement. Please support us in getting this books in our classroom permanently!
