Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth graders have spoken. I asked them what they wanted for an end-of-the-year treat, and they called out in unison, "More books!"
My students live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Our Title 1 school serves a hard-working community. School is an important outlet for my students, who are surrounded by gangs and poverty. What they most want from their education, though, is an opportunity to venture into other worlds through reading.
My Project
At the beginning of the year, I gave my students a reading challenge. "Read one million words by Halloween." They did it. "Read five million words by spring break." No problem. They are so enthusiastic about reading that I am rewarding them by letting them choose the next books that will come into our classroom library. They all wrote wish lists, and here are the results.
What inspires my kids? Current series of books, like "Breaking Dawn" from the Twilight series, The Lightning Thief, Lemony Snicket, and the Spiderwick Chronicles. Humorous books like Junie B Jones and Marvin Redpost. And classics like The Chronicles of Narnia.
When these books arrive, my kids will cheer.
We'll open each book and celebrate its title. We'll pass them around and take turns reading through each series. We will have a party celebrating reading and literacy, and the power of books. My students and I thank you.
