I am a middle school orchestra director at a school on the southside of Chicago, IL. This year I started an orchestra program for 126 underserved 4th-6th grade students. My students come to school for nine hours each day and four hours every other Saturday with the goal of working hard to get to college. Right now our orchestra consists of ten violins that my school owns and a classroom set that we are borrowing from another school. Every child is learning to play the violin. We would like cellos, violas, basses, and violins of our own, especially since we are not guaranteed the use of the other school's instruments for next year. Finding enough instruments for every child in a school is expensive so we are doing it one violin, one viola, one cello at a time. The kids have taken to the violin extremely well. They are doing an amazing job as beginners and have even had their first performance for Chicago businessmen and women downtown. These students are poised performers, are very motivated to continue study on the instrument, and look forward to the time when they can take them home to practice. I am a strong believer in the power of music, and know that learning an instrument will teach children the discipline and work ethic that will help them on their way to a better future.
