This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a first-year teacher, trying to find all the materials necessary to have a successful first year of school. I will be teaching 8th grade English in a city school in St. Louis. My incoming 8th graders are really excited for this school year. They love to read and write stories. And they especially love to learn about history through short stories and books.
I want to provide my students with the same access to the texts we read in class that I had growing up.
I am also hoping to foster a love of reading with my students through access to a variety of new books. I teach at a magnet school and I am hoping to give my students as many opportunities as possible to foster a strong and supportive learning environment.
My Project
I am hoping to get enough copies of Their Eyes Were Watching God so that each of my students can have his or her own personal copy. This will be the last unit we do together in 8th grade, and it is an incredibly dense, rigorous text. Should each student have their own copy of the text, they would be able to engage fully with it. While class sets are wonderful, each student having their own copy means they can annotate throughout to gain a deeper understanding and they can take the book home to complete homework throughout the unit, increasing learning.
