One-Stop Shop! Help My Students Print, Copy, and Scan!
Help me give my students a printer/scanner/copier that we can use in our classroom, to help erase the barrier and lag-time between our digital classroom and our physical one.
I teach 6th grade at the only public all-girls middle school in the state of Kentucky. I tell anyone who asks that we are our school district's best kept secret. We celebrate our cultural and socioeconomic diversity, and these young ladies commit to their success.
I have been teaching since the fall of 2007, and I am still overwhelmed every year by how bright and talented these young ladies are, even given the difficult circumstances they live with daily.
Our Title I school serves a population in which over 65%of our students live below the poverty level, but that never slows them down. In order to prepare my students to be successful adults, I have to show them how literacy in the 21st century has moved beyond the pencil and paper.
My Project
Students in my classroom are writers, and writers need to be able to work with a draft in order to revise and edit their pieces. Trying to revise on a screen is challenging for the girls because our screens are small and their view is limited. But right now, printing a copy of a particular piece is a struggle. We have to send out to the printers that are downstairs and it takes as long as 15 minutes of a 50 minute class to get our pages returned. With the ability to copy on demand, students can conduct peer-reviews as needed instead of waiting a day or two for me to get the copies made down in the copy center. Also, students can get an extra copy of their lost homework, or text, without delay.
Another key benefit of having an all-in-one printer is the ability to scan and upload hard-copies of journal entries, illustrated assignments, or writing assessments to our digital portfolios.
Currently, I have to take a picture with my phone and upload them individually into students' portfolios. If the student can scan and upload her own work samples, we have the double benefit of increasing her autonomy and freeing my time for more focused intervention with students in need.
With over 100 students a year, the ability to make my room a one-stop shop will increase my students' efficiency as well as my own. It allows us to focus on the real work of honing our communication skills instead of getting bogged down by delay.
