One Seat, Two Seats, Red Seat, Blue Seat, Choose Seat
My students need 2 wobble stools, 2 yoga mats (to be cut in half) and 4 ball chairs so that they can make seating choices as to how they can best focus and learn.
Our building is a Title One building with a large population of students who receive free or reduced rate lunch. My classroom gives all students an equal foundation from which to grow and learn. I strive to provide a safe, stimulating and inspiring classroom environment.
My students are wonderful, active, energetic, eager first graders!
They love to learn and are curious about everything. Why do I want to do everything I can to make my teaching and their learning engaging and developmentally appropriate and then require them to sit in rigid, assigned seats for their work time? This just isn’t what is best for our young learners. By giving them choices of location and type of seating they can be focused while having the ability to wiggle and move. They’re children!
My Project
My project gives my active, dynamic, young learners choice. By having a variety of places to work (from cushions to mats to ball chairs to wobble stools to standing up options) they can find the spot that helps them to focus. Imagine a thriving classroom where some students are writing at a desk perched on a wobble seat, others are balancing on a ball chair engrossed in a good book. Students are laying on yoga mats solving math equations. This vision is a reality every day.
