Help me give my students 50 copies of Lunch Money. Our school is starting One School, One Book in January as a school-wide family reading project. We need 450 copies of the book total, one copy per family.
Reading a book series is one of the ways to hook reluctant readers and build engagement, fluency, and vocabulary because of the consistent characters and format of the stories. In a world where sports and video games dominate most elementary school students’ attention, and books are often considered “chores” or “boring,” I want to introduce our students to the world of adventure and excitement that so many books can bring, if given a chance!
As a Literacy Specialist, I consider my role to be that of a literacy champion, family engagement cheerleader, and book whisperer.
We have about 700 students in our school with a very transient population, a number of military families, and both parents working (or single parents working multiple jobs). Many students do not have nightly books to read and rarely make trips to the public library. Through Family Reading Nights, One School, One Book, Dr. Seuss Week, and a Book Mobile, I have tried over the past three years to share my passion for books and the importance of reading with both the children and parents. I want to flame the fire for pleasure reading through series reading.
My Project
Do you remember crawling into bed at night reading with your parents? Or gathering together on the sofa to listen to a chapter of a favorite story? Family Engagement and reading together is critical for both modeling good reading behavior and building stronger readers.
One School, One Book is a school-wide program where the entire school spends several weeks reading a chapter book together.
Each night, families will read a chapter of Lunch Money at home and talk about the book. At school, we will have questions and activities, and end with a culminating Family Reading Night of fun! We need a total of 450 copies before the beginning of January, but hopefully we can start with this 50. #LiteracyforLife
