One-On-One: Low Stress, Little Distraction, No Competition

My Project

My students are sweet, happy, and excited to be in school- until they are not. English Language Learners may come to school with Limited Formal Education for many reasons. These SLIFE students immediately catch on that their peers are more academically prepared and fear having their lack of skills exposed. This embarrassment causes the students to go into fight or flight mode. They are absent from school, they are defensive, or become jokesters to camouflage their needs to their classmates. With a room divider, students will feel safer to participate in one on one and small group reading instruction. They will have the opportunity to free themselves from the real or perceived judgement of others.

Additionally, an executive functioning toolkit will assist our teacher team to create individual supports while working one-on-one (organization, self-control, task initiation, time management, flexibility, attention, perseverance, metacognition and working memory) with students that have to learn a new language but also may have special needs.

These tools are absolutely necessary and will create a more successful school experience for our many SLIFE students. They will leave the school year, with less anxiety, more tools for independence, and grow their literacy skills. It will be a dream come true.
