Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school district serves a huge Latino population in the Indianapolis area. Most of my students are from low-income families. Every year we welcome new immigrant families to our district, mainly from Central America. he school has a Spanish Immersion Program with a component of biliteracy (English-Spanish) where students of different ethnicities collaborate in the acquisition of a second language.
Many of my American born students are learning Spanish while all my Latino students are learning English.
Our school has a one-to-one device-to-student program, and the students are well-trained in the use of that equipment.
My Project
Learning a second language takes time and practice. In order to be bi-literate, you have to be able to read and write proficiently. Activities that engage the students in an active use of the second language promotes a better understanding.
Generation Z students are characterized as “digital integrators,” and, as such, video production comes naturally to them.
We need green screen equipment and a powerful computer. This equipment will allow us to create professional grade videos. Learning will be more engaging, and, more importantly, we will be able to share our learning within our diverse community. My students will become producers of knowledge instead of just being consumers.
