Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders attend a public school in Compton, California. We are a Title I school, with most students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Crime, gangs, and poverty surround our campus. Inside the classroom, they feel safe and are eager to learn. They want to succeed, and they want to have access to the same types of resources that students in other districts use.
Please help fund my project to keep these wonderful children smiling and learning, as they read engaging chapter books and enter magical worlds.
My Project
I use chapter books to supplement the literature text. Let's face it. Kids like holding a chapter book in their hands, thinking it's a special treat because it's not a textbook. They don't realize all they are learning. Novels help improve their fluency and comprehension. They focus on text structure, themes, mood, and tone. Class discussions highlight life lessons. The best outcome is seeing the joy on their faces as they fall in love with literature! They want to read more independently.
Last year, I taught with chapter books and my students' fluency, comprehension, and love for reading skyrocketed.
Lexile levels show a child's reading comprehension level. All of my students improved. Over half of my class showed Lexile gains in the hundreds, including 5 students with gains ranging from 310 to 565 points! I know reading chapter books contributed to their success.
They were always begging me to read one more chapter with them.
I am teaching 3rd grade this school year, and I will have some of my students from last year. I want them to read new engaging novels. I chose classics, with special characters. I bet you fondly remember these titles! Take a look at the picture to see my choices.
