I am a 2nd year teacher working in a Title I school, with a 60% + below poverty rate. The majority of my students live in apartments and government funded housing. I have 4 students that are at grade level, the rest are below level.
Though I have many students that struggle with math, reading, and writing they are eager learners and have a great desire to grow and learn!
As a teacher, I am thrilled that my students want to help others in the class who struggle with different concepts. Every one of them has a chance to help or teach another because they all have different areas they struggle with.
My Project
I would like to have a class set of The One and Only Ivan so my class can practice reading as a whole group, small group (book club), and individually. We will be working on fluency and reading comprehension. Throughout the book, we will also be integrating science and art projects revolving around Ivan, his habitat, and the other characters and events in the story.
The majority of my students come from low income homes and lack quality books at home to read.
By providing a class set of this wonderful book, my students will be able to practice many of the skills we teach in class, but are unable to do at home due to a lack of resources.
I am also excited to integrate art projects and science into our curriculum for this book. For example, doing research on the habitats and biom of the characters, then designing and creating one based on their character (this will also integrate math!).
Ivan loved to draw. We will study Picasso and do a few art projects revolving around things happening in the book using Picasso's style of art.
I have many wonderful things planned for my students and this book! I look forward to implementing them.
