I teach sixth grade English language arts to a great group of kids in Brooklyn. I have an amazing group of kids who get so excited about the characters in the books we read that they shout their enthusiastic answers in class. I love that they are passionate about books and know this is my gift to give them, the love of reading.
We work every day in groups, both big and small, to build each other up.
Maybe we're creating travel brochures for settings of our books or slideshow decks of Greek gods and goddesses. We may be devising arguments to encourage people to adopt pets instead of buying them from pet stores or writing scripts to create news stories to help other students understand the plight of endangered species.
My Project
The new school year in September will be difficult for so many reasons, way too many for me to mention. I'll be able to help in some ways, while others will use their strengths to help in other ways. It will truly be an all hands on deck situation, possibly even more stressful than teaching and learning from home. Everyone is and will continue to be overwhelmed for a long time to come - not just teachers, students, and parents.
One small way we can help is to eliminate the need for kids to provide school supplies.
Over a series of proposals, I am going to try my hardest to create a "Welcome Back to School" package for each of my roughly 120 kids. This proposal is for pencil cases. This will mean that each of my kids will have a handy place to keep their brand new supplies. All of their pens, pencils, markers, highlighters and erasers will be in one place. We WILL have a great year next year and would greatly appreciate your help in making that possible.
