Help me give my students personal undergarments for times when they are experiencing homelessness at any stage of their life. To eliminate the shame of having to wear dirty undergarments, I would like to have these items available.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve at a public school in an urban Milwaukee community. 100% of my class population identify as African-American and qualify for free/reduced lunch. Over 90% of scholars are bused into the school. Scholars reflect the Milwaukee landscape as my scholars come from all walks of life and every corner of this great city.
My school is in a unique position within the transformation model; aiming to bridge the achievement gap through community collaboration, parent/student voice, and the mantra, "Best for Kids."
My scholars thrive in the classroom when lessons are culturally relevant and engage them on all levels of learning. My scholars are compassionate, inquisitive, vibrant and love learning.
My Project
The materials provided from this project will ensure that arriving to school with unclean clothes or without proper undergarments is no longer a barrier to learning for our scholars. Every child has a right to have all of their physiological needs met in order to focus on the academic growth and character development.
Many times, scholars come to me in the morning asking for fresh socks or a bar of soap to freshen up; now I will have access to these basic necessities so that cleanliness is not a barrier to learning or an opportunity for bullying.
I am sure that these supplies will increase attendance and the confidence of all scholars.
