Almost every student has or uses a touch-screen device in their phone, computer, or tablet. Let's empower our music students into the 21st Century with an iPad!
Many colleges are beginning to cut back on the arts and music.
This is quickly trickling down to many public school districts. Gratefully, our school district has continued to support music and the arts with minimal cuts. This still leaves us with little money to purchase new technology beyond our regular yearly costs.
We see a very diverse population of students in our music department. Some students stop down regularly to practice their band music, some come for group guitar lessons, some come down only for one class. Additionally, we meet with the life skills special education class for a weekly music exploration class. Every single student that comes down is genuinely interested in music and has a sincere desire to learn more. The students love technology and embrace new, fun ways to learn.
My Project
I want to use the students' current 21st Century skills and put them to good use in the classroom. With an iPad, the students will be able to use music specific apps for music theory and music composition. They will also be able to easily video and audio record themselves with instant playback. We can coordinate the iPad with our interactive white board so our special needs students can utilize the apps in a big way on a big screen.
The Marching Band will utilize an iPad in their performances and judges recordings. For our annual spring musical, students may watch online performances of the show, look up information and ideas, or record themselves using authentic assessment strategies.
In the music department, we teach about becoming better people and citizens of the community. This includes using their inherent technological skills to better themselves and everyone around them. Let's show them properly how to utilize these skills!
Every single class, group, and extracurricular music activity will benefit from such a simple device.
A small donation to this project will create huge opportunities for students throughout the high school. The students and myself are very excited to get this project funded!
