My young students are eager to learn, explore, and share ideas; they have huge hearts and want to help their friends discover new things too! Our school was built in the early 1960s, and our classroom is reflective of the building's age. Though my little friends are excited to come to school and to learn, they lack the resources they need to be the best they can be!
As a teacher at a Title I school devastated by Hurricane Irma, I expose my students, many of whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged, to opportunities that they would not otherwise have.
My students need exposure to learning opportunities for academic, social, emotional, and physical growth. Many of my students come from disadvantaged homes and do not have access to the supplies they need. Our island community is small and, in many ways, my students live sheltered lives. Aside from the evacuation, many of them have never even seen the world outside our island community. The desire of the kids to learn is evident despite our limited resources but would be truly enhanced with the resources provided by your generous donation.
My Project
A family is a committed group of people who accept each other. One human family unites all humans and is the official motto of our island community.
Our first grade family is committed to accepting all humans and to sharing unique learning experiences.
This year, we have learned and experienced so much together! For the project, students will write about our inclusive classroom family as well as favorite learning experiences they have shared. Students will learn about the writing process by planning, drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing a shared book in which each student will contribute. The title of the book will be “One Family,” and it will highlight themes of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion.
Students will read mentor texts to learn about the writing process and to practice different writing techniques. Students will use card stock and lamination pouches to practice the writing process and to practice publishing books. As a culminating activity, students will host an Author’s Tea and Book Signing Party. The publishing party will include tablecloths as well as assorted teas and coffees for parents and guests to enjoy as authors read and share their work aloud.
