My students need different options for flexible seating! Having wobble chairs for teens is a necessary tool for my students as it will give them the opportunity to move while remaining engaged in the learning process!
Our middle school serves one class of each sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students for a total of 88 students. These students come to our school from diverse backgrounds across our district for a challenging and rigorous curriculum that allows them to secure advanced placement in high school.
Our classroom library is a place where diverse students come together to learn and relate to each other through shared interests.
Middle school students are focused on the increasing pressure to fit a norm and find out who they want to be. I have found that the pressures of being a middle schooler often recedes as students have conversations focusing on a middle ground of literature. The students are able to bond and share experiences from their lives with their peers in a safe environment.
My Project
Having materials for flexible seating for teens is especially beneficial to their learning. Having to sit hour after hour without moving while expecting the brain to maintain functions is demanding enough for adults. Pre-teens and teens do this every day while attending school while going through the most physical changes since birth. I have requested not only comfortable furniture for my students to enjoy, but also numerous tools for students to use to maintain movement while learning. Wobble chairs allow for students to be seated at their desk while engaging their core and leg muscles.
Pre-teens and teens need the availability of flexible seating to provide them with the opportunity to move while maintaining critical learning experiences.
Utilizing tools such as wobbly chairs and desk bands to bounce their feet on will greatly improve students ability to focus in class. Items such as a futon and mobile desks provides students with the power to manipulate their environment to best fit their needs. All of these items will not only help students in my classroom, but will also aid students who struggle with ADD and ADHD. I am often asked by students if they may take a walk around the room, or at times, the hallway. The items on my wishlist will directly help with these specific needs.
