Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from families without books at home and many have never been to the library yet they LOVE books. Help them build their love of literacy by giving them yet another way to access books. If you ask them what their favorite thing to do is, they will tell you they like to read books.
Our school is located in California.
This is a kindergarten class. The majority of our students qualify for free lunches and english is their second language. We are surrounded by industrial centers. More and more of them are not able to attend preschool because the economy has hit their families extremely hard. They are working hours that do not let them have a regular schedule to send their kids to preschool. About 1/3 of my students this year registered on the first day of school or later. Many had never done any "school like" activities such as coloring and writing. Yet with parent workshops, after school help, and parents getting more and more involved, we are seeing big progress. They are young but eager to learn. They may not be dressed properly everyday but they come in bouncy and wanting to "hear that story again!"
My Project
I am asking for a listening center that can go in a corner of my classroom. This will be in the "quiet" part of the room. If you have ever been in a classroom where most of the students are learning English, you know that is is not quiet everywhere! We also need a CD. player, headphones, and a jack to get started.
We are requesting a set of 8 headphones as I have some listening activities that we can play with a small group. We have tried to use them with the CD. player on low but it is too distracting to the other students. This would give the students another way to here stories each day.
This project will help our literacy program at school immensely.
It will give students that have not been exposed to literature in the first five years of their lives a way to access it. For those that speak a second language, they can have more repetitions of a familiar story to help them build their vocabulary. By them coming home excited about literacy, they inspire their families to read more, talk more, and visit the library.
