This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I teach Math, Science and Social Studies to a lively group of 6th graders. They are curious and full of personality. They are passionate and eager to show the world what they can do. They tirelessly ask questions about their future and want to know how they can start changing the world now.
Currently in their last year of school before they move on to middle school, they have a lot of responsibility within the building outside of their academics.
They are part of the Student Council, manage the recycling school program, sing in chorus, kindergarten helpers, etc. They are curious about the next stages of their educational journey while also understanding that these next few months will lead to new obstacles. Their hunger for more drives me to deliver on their expectations daily. They use a variety of technology to access their learning and they will be the shakers of tomorrow's future!
The materials that I am requesting will benefit my learners both in school and at home. Each year as I prepare my students for the journey of middle school, I introduce a brief history on Emmett Till and his impact on the Civil Rights Movements. I then do a read aloud of Ghost Boys which follows a young boy who meets the ghost of Emmett Till and has to navigate difficult truths. Through this text, students dive in and their curiosity soars as they discover this character's journey. Providing a text to each student would allow students to jot their thoughts and be able to do reading at home as well.
