My Students

Unfortunately, I haven't been so absorbed in a book in a really, long time. The last noteworthy occurrences I remember was in fifth grade (Mr. Mathews reading/ESL class: I would routinely finish my busywork early and go near his desk to make sure that I had a good spot.

The students in our school are mostly of Native American origin.

They have limited experiences when they go out to explore beyond the small community. The one book one school project has allow then to go beyond there community in the past. The students get to keep the books after reading them with there parents/teachers.

My Project

This year our elementary school is doing something very similar with a classic book:"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". All three grade levels will read this selection and each subject area will incorporate it into their curriculum. Last year was a very meaningful time for our school which allowed us to once again reconnect with the parents by revisiting the joy for reading. This year we really need something to keep us moving and revive us.

Our school piloted a "One Book One School" program last year and we feel as though it was really a hit!

All families were provided with a copy of the same book. Along with their book, they also received a bookmark with certain dates that we wanted certain chapters to be read by. Each day, 10 minutes of our instructional time was dedicated to this book - either asking comprehension questions or exploring extension activities.
