RMS welcomes sixth - eighth grade middle schooler students who attend the fourth most diverse school district in Missouri (Niche, 2019) with approximately 70% of students qualifying for free & reduced lunch. Although our students all come from various backgrounds, countries, nationalities, and religions their differences are what contribute the the positive and supportive culture in our school. Through community building, leadership opportunities, student support systems, sports, after school clubs, community service, students as peer mediators, and general student focused practices our students are developing skills that will help them build the confidence & skills to do great things! Students in our school have created a strong community of support for each other through our shared reading experiences and I want this love of reading to continue to grow each year.
Many of our students have experienced various struggles with reading and are discovering that with the right books, increasing the amount of time they spend reading each day, and effective instructional practices they will continue to improve!
My Project
Our RMS One Book, One School Program is a building-wide shared reading time when every teacher reads and analyzes the selected book aloud with a group of students at the same time. The program was started to immerse students & staff in literature rich reading discussions, provide opportunities for our students to discover the enjoyment in reading, enhance their reading skills, and build a positive middle school community. We believe this building wide reading time has had a positive influence on our school’s culture and has been powerful in showing students how they can connect with each other and literature.
