Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching 7th grade English Language Arts in an urban district for over 15 years and each year my population has changed. This year I am teaching three general education classes and one ESL push in class.
Many of my students live in poverty and experience stress on a daily basis.
I can promise that each student who enters my room is given many opportunities to learn and grow throughout the year. I strive to make my classroom a safe haven for my students and a home away from home!
My Project
So I recently became the proud owner of two new novel sets. A teacher retired and gifted them to me. I am beyond excited to have a class set of "Across Five Aprils". I read this book when I was in middle school and I only had one other historical fiction novel in my classroom. I also received "Tangerine" which is another great young adult novel. It will be perfect to pair up with my other realistic fiction novels "Freak The Mighty" and “Loser”. Since I am teaching different levels this year, I am going start using more then one novel within my class. I am eager for this opportunity.
Teaching novels has become an integral part of my classroom and my absolute favorite way to present the all the skills in our curriculum.
Novel Ties are the most comprehensive teachers guide I have come across in my 22 years of teaching. It includes vocabulary, literary skills, literary devices, and writing skills. By having the E-book version I can easily make packets for my students or place it on my Google Classroom. I utilize the audio CD for the read aloud, because I love narrators voices and and I tend to read too fast or stumble over words. These awesome resources will help me to create a successful and exciting Language Arts Classroom!
