My Students

Determined, energetic, and full of grit. This group of students are in Honors English 11 and chose to take this class - the more challenging class.

Most of them started out in Honors English as 9th graders, and have continued to follow that path through the years.

Each year, my new group continues to meet each challenge I present. They are eager and willing to prepare for AP Literature their senior year, so reading and writing are consistent activities.

Their work ethic is phenomenal! Most of my students are taking the highest level courses for their junior year, and many are involved in extra-curricular activities or work a part-time job. Despite the number of balls each of these "jugglers" has in the air, each one rises to the occasion and achieves the tasks.

My Project

This nonfiction book does a great job telling Stevenson's story about starting out as a new lawyer and wanting to help others. Readers learn not only about his struggles, but the struggles of many people Stevenson meets during his early years as a lawyer. Not only is the author a wonderful storyteller, but he also integrated research into the piece perfectly that keeps readers interested and turning pages.

The book made me angry, cry, and hopeful.

It is a beautiful example of how ONE person CAN make a difference and that goodness does prevail. In our current world, there is a great deal of negativity, uninformed people, an unwillingness to change by some, and much sadness being reported. NOW is a perfect time for this book.

We begin the year with a memoir unit and read excerpts from a variety of authors who have overcome numerous obstacles. I'd love to add Stevenson's book to our list and have the students read his entire story.
