Mrs. Lopez from Missouri City TX is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books to fill an empty classroom library including books like Flat Stanley, Amelia Bedelia, and Magic Tree House.

Some of my students have not yet developed a love for reading. It is seen as something they have to do. My goal is to get students interested in books by giving them interesting and varied choices in our library. The goal is for every student to see the value in being a good reader.
Our school is very diverse and that is one of the reasons that I love it so much.
The school itself is relatively new having been rebuilt in 2008. Students here are so sweet and eager to please all of the time. They support each other and look out for one another as though we are all a family.
As part of the reading curriculum, second-grade classrooms should all have a library with about 1,000 books. Books in any classroom are probably the most valued items in the room. With these new books my students would be able to browse and select books that they themselves are interested in reading, instead of being given a single book to read that they may or may not have any interest in. As a relatively new teacher (2nd year) who has not taught reading before, the very last thing that I want is to limit my students because we do not have a library. I am personally investing $300 of my own money which is as much as I can at the moment. I have visited the local library as well as my friends and neighbors asking for any discarded books. The result has been a meager start, but nowhere near what my students deserve.
Second grade is a year that can truly be a turning point for children in learning to read and discovering a love of reading.
It is so wonderful to talk to a kid who suddenly discovered a love of reading and hear them tell you all about this great book they just can't put down. So many studies have shown that elementary students who read well and read often do better later on. So this is our year to make it happen. And we will make it happen! One way or another, because they deserve the best.
