This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are constantly seeking to read a book in our classroom library. Despite the fact that we have about 30 books in our bookshelves, they read them over and over again during their free time after completing assigned work. I don't want them to lose that enthusiasm for reading.
My students are in their journey of becoming bi-literate in English and Spanish.
This is a first grade classroom in which half of our enrolled students are English Only speakers and the other half are English Learners. In my classroom they are taught all subjects in Spanish and all students show enthusiasm towards learning Spanish. They enjoy the few books that we have in Spanish, and seek every opportunity they have to spend time at our friendly reading station. Unfortunately, this is only my second year as a teacher, and I haven't had the resources to build a good Spanish collection of books.
Our school offers a dual immersion program with a model of 50/50, which allows students to master the two languages. We are currently in our 4th year since the school program started, and as time passes will continue to increase our grade levels all the way until we reach the 8th grade.
My Project
The books I am requesting will be used in our classroom library and will assist my students to develop their second language acquisition. My students will be exposed to diverse genres of reading material that suits their interests. All the books that I am requesting are in Spanish since that is the language that I teach, and these are more difficult to obtain. Unfortunately, there is a short selection of books in Spanish that we have access to, but our students will be thrilled to have a least a one new book at our two mini bookshelves that look empty. The books we have are the only the books my students have access to in my classroom and currently we do not have a school library at our site.
This project will improve my classroom by giving my students the opportunity to have access to reading material in the language they are learning.
It would give my students access to a library that we currently lack at our school site. This project will make a difference in my students by feeding their minds with exciting new stories. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and this is a great opportunity for them to develop a passion for reading.
