This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our schools is rural school that resides on the outside of Fairmont North Carolina. In a district with large classes, minimal music resources, low socioeconomic climate, teaching music in our Title 1 district is increasingly becoming more difficult.
My students, who are predominantly Native American and African American, seem to take all of this in stride.
They take what is given to them and create great music, but as their teacher I would like to see them create extraordinary music.
My Project
Reeds are needed so instruments like the clarinet and saxophone can make a sound. Without reeds my students can not play their instruments properly. In the past, students have been using a reed for an entire year and this greatly impacts the quality of their playing and learning.
My students have been through a lot with the the closing and combining of schools.
In an area where many students do not have good coping skills many have had hard times since the transition. Many have lost friends, many where afraid of being put in a dangerous situation, and many just felt like their voice didn't matter. I am hoping that by getting these students involved in music I can give them an OUTLET and a VOICE!
It's actually this schools first year existing as a middle school. Formerly a high school, this school consists of two smaller middle schools that were combined in an attempted to aid in solving financial problems in the school system. Because of these factors, funding for the music classroom is almost nonexistent. Students in our area cannot afford the cost of instruments or materials, and limited funding from the school makes it almost impossible for the students to receive the quality instruction needed. School provided instruments are in poor condition, which creates a problem for those who would like to participate in music classes or band.
