Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach 6th grade to students who are anywhere from 2-4 years behind in reading. In order for my students to become prepared for college, I need to connect reading to their future goals. Unfortunately, we have a VERY limited amount of books that are of interest to my students.

I'm a deeply committed and passionate teacher who believes ALL students deserve an equal opportunity to a quality education.

My students come to YES because many of the surrounding middle schools are deemed unacceptable by the state of Texas. At YES, Youth Engaged in Service, we ask students to become leaders within their community. Leaders need to learn about the world around them and different perspectives and yet they have access in the classroom to a very limited number of books. Community and financial resources are extremely scarce and for most, my library will be their only opportunity to check out books. My students are motivated, eager, and ready to read! They just need more books to help them learn and work towards college graduation.

My Project

The books requested range in level and genre. 100% of my students WILL go and graduate from college and I want to ensure that when they attend their university of choice that they have as much literature exposure of their more affluent counterparts. My students may not ever have the chance to go to another country or experience other states, but they CAN read about them! These books will provide opportunities to experience things my students might not otherwise have. Every day my students attend reading conferences with me talking about their books and what they love about them. I know their love for reading will continue to grow if they had more options when choosing their books. I sincerely thank you for joining me in providing opportunities for some extremely dedicated future leaders.
