Once you learn to read, you will be free forever-F.Douglas
My students need reading to be more fun! I have included items to help make independent reading fun including carpet squares, finger flashlights, monster fingers and magnifying glasses!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."-Mason Cooley. My students may come from a low-income district, but with the right book, they can go anywhere they want. I am hoping, with your help, that I can instill a love for reading within each of my students.
My class is made up of 25 diverse students from a low-income school district.
Of my 25 smiling faces, 12 students in my classroom have special needs. Despite this, I have 25 inquisitive, loving, desperate for attention, lovable kiddos. My classroom is ran with a co-teaching model, where we try our best to help every student succeed despite whatever may be holding them back.
My Project
I would like to use these materials to create a love for reading within my students. In order to do this, I have requested a number of items to make independent or partner reading more entertaining. I have asked for items such as, finger flashlights, monster fingers, and magnifying glasses, in order to create a fun atmosphere where students are excited for reading days like "flashlight Friday"! I have also requested a reading easel and easel supplies so that while students are reading, I am able to pull small groups to work on the skills that they will need to be able to read independently. I also intend to use the easel to whole group teach and hold "circle time" to engage students in a more intimate climate. This is also what I will be using the carpet squares for, so that the students are able to be on the floor for reading and lesson time.
In another year, my students will be moving on to the middle school.
I feel that it is my responsibility to instill in them a love for reading before they leave to go to the "big" school. With these items I hope to get them excited about reading, and to give them all of the skills that they need to be an independent reader who can use books to take them where ever they want to go in life.
