Ms. Smith from Temple Terr FL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a class set of The Boxcar Children, two boxes of copy paper, pencils, and post it notes to improve their reading skills.

My forty-five third grade students come to class each day with a hunger to consume as much information as they can. Providing them with texts and stories that keep them interested and focused while still learning is difficult.
I teach in a Title 1 charter school in an urban area.
I have the privilege of teaching 45 children reading, writing, and language arts. My kiddos sometimes come in wearing the same shirt or pants as the previous day, often without having breakfast, and exhausted from whatever happened the night before. However, not one child walks into my room without a big smile and a cheery "Good morning, Miss Smith!" They come in excited to be here and immediately unpack and get started. They're ready to learn! They check the agenda for the day and read the morning message, eager to find out what we will be reading about and learning each day.
The novels and materials that I'm requesting are going to help my students gain a greater respect for reading. Many of the texts and stories that we read have little relevance to my kiddos. They often involve some character that is unrelatable, or are just too difficult for my children to read. Reading "The Boxcar Children" in elementary school was one of my favorite units. This is the book that opened my mind and helped me become an avid reader! I'm hoping that it will do the same for my students. I think that this book will be simple enough to read, while still keeping them engaged and thinking. The copy paper, pencils, and post-it notes will be used for making copies of the unit activities and allow my thinkers to keep track of their thoughts as they read.
Introducing my students to literature and novels will foster their love for reading.
Providing them with a text that they will be able to read and teaching them how to analyze and READ a text will be a great benefit to them. These are skills they will need to use for the rest of their life. I want my students to know that reading gives them a place to go, a place to escape to, when they have to stay where they are.
