Our school is wonderfully diverse. We have students in Pre-k through fifth grade from about thirty two countries. We have a high percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals. Many of the students are second language learners. All of our students are curious learners.
The program is unique in that part of the school is a Montessori Program and the second part is managed with a traditional program.
We want the students to experience a rich learning environment. Our urban suburb community is supportive of each other and looks for ways to offer opportunities to explore, learn new vocabulary, read, calculate, and make inquiries.
My Project
Students love to be engaged in the stories. They love to retell stories using puppets. Our school is transforming itself into a STEAM school with laying the foundation of problem solving at all levels. The materials have activities for the students to identify the problem and then build a solution, such as a house that won't blow down from the Three Little Pigs.
The library will be open before school for the students to explore their fairy tales through retelling or building a solution to the problem held in one of the fairy tales.
Different versions of the fairy tales will be available for the students to read and to check out. Photographs and their projects will be highlighted on the bulletin board next to the library. It is all about learning coming alive.
The Create a Path Magnetic Center allows the student to develop different maze like paths and trying them out with the balls. This could represent different paths Little Red Riding Hood Takes, the path of Hansel and Gretel, the magic carpet path of Aladdin. It is a different way to interpret the storyline using their own thinking.
