My students need a creative way to master integration of knowledge in literature. What better way to help them master that skill than to provide a manipulative set of STEM Problem Solving Fairy Tale Kits!
I work in a Title I school Alabama. Many of our students come from low income families with very limited resources so school tends to be the brightest part of their day. For some, school is the only place where they have stability, have their needs met, feel unconditional love, and have the opportunity to use resources and have experiences they otherwise wouldn't have.
My students are like a ray of sunshine some days and bring complete joy to the classroom despite the many challenges they face at home.
Many receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Some rarely have life experiences we see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me because for some, my classroom provides the only joy they may experience. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
Little ones learn through manipulation, interaction, and play with concrete objects. Learning is inevitable when they are given this opportunity. Most small children do well early on in math because they can manipulate a variety of objects but literature, on the other hand, can sometimes be very difficult because of the lack of concrete objects to manipulate.
What better way to help a child relate and learn about characters, settings, major events and key details in stories and to compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in favorite fairy tales than to provide them much needed hands-on interaction of concrete, fairy tale, objects!
The STEM Fairy Tale Kits provide just that. It is truly the perfect cross-curricular activity to provide a wealth of interaction and learning in reading.
The Fairy Tale Kits will be key to my students success in fully understanding and mastering the Common Core requirement in reading. My kindergarteners will have the opportunity to work with partners in literacy stations with the problem solving fairy tale kits. I can't wait to see them light up as they recreate and retell their favorite fairy tales through the STEM activities.
