Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an area where adversity and inequities are the norm; however, their interest and desire to seek opportunities to better themselves is unwavering. Their eyes light up when they hear stories about life outside of our city, and they crave experiences that are often not offered to them just because of where they live.
If there is one thing I admire most about my students, it is their curiosity.
They hunger for knowledge of what is out there in the world beyond the realm of their neighborhood. Most of them have never left the country, many have never left the state, and some have never even left the city. My students are an incredibly driven group of individuals who deserve opportunities that our city and district alone simply cannot offer them. It is my hope and dream that my students will have access to the opportunities they seek to satisfy their curiosity of the world around them.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to visit Ellis Island and experience what it was like to immigrate to the United States and be welcomed by the Statue of Liberty. They will participate in a listening tour, not only hearing stories but truly experiencing what it was like entering a new country for the first time.
The classroom will come to life as students learn about immigration and urbanization through a firsthand experience.
They will walk the paths that immigrants traveled as they entered the country for the first time. Students will engage in thoughtful conversations in small group discussions about both immigration and urbanization, applying the skills and knowledge they have learned in literature and social studies to a real life experience. I hope my students have a chance to bring their learning to life with the help of you wonderful donors!
