When we make the right books available, teenagers won't stop reading!
I teach 10th grade Reading/Writing Workshop to students in an inner-city alternative school. Many of my students read below grade level and my class is designed to reach students who might not embrace reading without a nurturing and engaging setting. My goal is to help them love reading and to create life-long readers, writers, and learners, and students who are engaged enough in reading to be successful in college.
Most of the books available through the department of education are classic school texts that students associate with their struggles with reading and not with pleasure. Given these choices, most of my kids check out during reading time. However, when presented with choices that truly interest them, I'm finding that my students will really embrace reading.
The newest genre that has kids begging me for books is the VAMPIRE series! Much to my excitement, I'm finding entire series of books that I can't keep on the shelves.
Your help will make it possible for my students to perceive reading as something they can connect to and books as tempting and exciting. And, of course, reading every, single day will help them be ready for college. And I want to see every one of my students go to, and be successful in, college. Thank you so much for reading this proposal.
