Once a Student, Always a Student: Learning at SXSWEdu

I need a registration badge and meal stipend to attend SXSWedu so I can learn financial literacy skills to teach my high school students in our Deaf Education Program.

My Students

"Just keep swimming!" -Dory, Finding Nemo. This silly message inspires my students to persevere despite any obstacles in life. I am an ATPE Member.

My students attend the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf housed on our campus.

Most of our students are bused in from surrounding school districts to attend our specialized program. We offer services from certified deaf education teachers, deaf-blind services, interpreters, interveners, audiology, speech therapy and much more! Many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

My Project

I need to equip my students with financial literacy skills that they can use now and in their future jobs and even when they're out in society buying clothes, supplies, groceries or ordering food at restaurants. I need to teach them how to budget to be able to pay bills and rent later on in life. Right now in class, my students apply for classroom "jobs" and each month they earn a "paycheck" and extra bonuses as rewards. I teach them how to budget their money so they can buy items in our classroom store as well as pay their "bills" (such as electric, chair fee, and rent).

They will need to learn how to problem solve, make informed financial choices in life, and become tech-savvy, marketable employees upon graduation.

SXSWedu has several sessions that will teach me how to teach these invaluable skills to my students. I'll learn so many more creative ideas like this about how to further teach my students about money management and financial literacy. "Once a student, always a student!"

I am a proud member of ATPE.
