Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students athletes, like the rest of the school, come from an economically disadvantaged (low income/high poverty) area of Fort Worth, Texas.
Many students have to work before and/or after school.
Being involved in extracurricular activities provides them the opportunity to travel outside their area, compete, grow mentally and physically, and branch outside the norms of their everyday lifestyle.
They are true leaders, and although they aren't as privileged as others, they always strive to do good things in life.
My Project
Our track athletes are dedicated student athletes working out and competing during the changing seasons. Our district does not fund equipment or food for our athletes, making each sport have to try to fundraise all season. Being located in a very low, socio-economic area, our fundraisers tend to flop.
Students are left to sometimes buy their own workout gear, and a handful of athletes don't even have appropriate tennis shoes to safely participate in a sport.
We have asked for new Nike Men and Women's Zoom Rival cleats, new Gill shot puts, and other practice equipment (high jump crossbar) so our athletes have a fair opportunity to practice and compete against other schools that tend to be more privileged. The dedication is there, but us as coaches would love the chance to give back and reward the hard work that comes from our amazing student athletes!
