Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I performance improvement school with the majority of our students participating in the free lunch program. Many parents rely on a single income and some even work two jobs and still struggle to support their family. For many of my students, school is where they have access to books, supplies, and other resources that support their academic achievements. My students like to learn and feel empowered when they are given the chance to learn more about topics that interest them; I love giving my students the opportunity to develop their voice as they become independent, life-long learners. I want to help foster in them the sense that they too can make a difference as young learners.
I want my students to feel comfortable and safe in our classroom, so I want to offer my students the resources they need to help them take ownership and control of their own learning.
My Project
P.E. is a good place for my students to develop their fitness/sports skills over the course of our school year. It is also a good place for my students to record their progress in running, as well as build their core strength. Working in pods, they push each other to do their best at running a mile as fast as they can and to do as many sit-ups and push-ups possible in one recording session. The stopwatches will be used by my students to help keep time when their partners are running; the yoga mats will give my students a place to do sit ups and push ups if they want a barrier between themselves and the floor. Every time my students record their running times. or note the number of pushups and sit ups they can do, they will have the opportunity to integrate some math skills into physical education. Over the course of the school year, my students will create line and bar graphs to visually represent their progress over time.
Running becomes a team sport when my students work in small groups and support and help each other become the best runner they can be.
