This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is in an economically challenged area of the city. My students are an amazing group of students who face a number of daily challenges. They come to school each day ready to learn and excited to try new things and take risks.
Many of them face dangerous situations in the neighborhood and relish in the peaceful and fun parts of our school day.
Despite the challenges they work hard to be their best. This project will help support them in those efforts.
My Project
My students love to learn and thrive on hands on science. Since they live in the city they don't get to interact with nature on a regular basis. They love insects and will love to get their hands dirty and learn more about insects by watching them grow.
This opportunity to hatch butterflies and dissect owl pellets will be a life-changing moment for them.
We will watch the butterflies go through the life cycle and provide shelter, food and tons of love for them. Also, we will see the complete life cycle when we dissect the owl pellets and find out what they ate. We will focus on the impact of insects on the ecosystem and the environment. Also, we will compare different insects using the life cycle as a common thread.
